The combined effects of strain and inter-well coupling on the optical switching capabilities of InGaAs/InGaAs and InGaAs/InAlAs heterostructures will be studied. A range of optical experiments are planned on zero-net-strain structures, which allow large numbers if high quality quantum wells along with considerable control of the valence band line-up. Large magnetic and electric fields will be applied to modify the excitonic transitions and investigate proposals for usefully enhancing absorption properties, via changes in hole masses, band offsets, etc. Several advantages specific to tensile strained wells will be emphasised along with modulations to the strength and energy of coupled-well excitons, involving levels in adjacent wells. In combination with a study of feedback mechanisms, employing photogenerated charge densities, these will be used to design all-optical switching devices, similar to the so-called wireless-SEED .
