Summary on Grant Application Form
In its current form XPS is not an ideal technique for the study, with chemical specificity, of macromolecules and thin organic overlayers. Although an excellent technique for the elucidation of polymer surface chemistry the study of macromolecules in their entirety is not possible as the size of the molecules approaches the analysis depth of XPS itself. To overcome this difficulty we propose the development of the monochromated CrK beta source on the Scienta ESCA300 spectrometer at SERC Daresbury. This will extend the analysis depth of XPS from 9nm to 21nm, and with the use of angular resolved XPS the possibility of the determination of chemically specific compositional depth profiles becomes a real possibility. There is no information in existence on the attenuation lengths and photoelectron cross sections, both essential for quantitative XPS for CrK beta XPS. These parameters will be determined. An appropriate computer routine for the determination of depth profiles from angle resolved XPS will be developed. The upper limit to which buried interfaces can be studied will be studied will be established by the use of carefully prepared model specimens. It is anticipated that the CrK beta XPS facility will eventually be available to all via the usual RUSTI application procedures.
