Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed programme will study and establish protocols for the design, fabrication and use of implanted neural signal transducers based on microengineered microprobes. This multi- disciplinary project will be centred at Surrey where design and commissioning of the electrodes and biological investigation will take place. Surrey will also coordinate probe fabrication work at SERC VLSI facilities at Rutherford and Southampton. The design work will result in multi-electrode site probes in which probe size, geometrical area of electrode sites and position of sites will be controlled variables. Commissioning will require the design of precision headstage amplifier and filters, together with a study into encapsulation techniques. The biological investigation will use the locust as an animal model and will evaluate the performance of the probes together with establishing routine mounting and positioning techniques for neural signal recording from peripheral nerve trunks. This will be an essential first step towards the development of implanted systems which can be used to provide preemptive feedback for use in the control of functional electrical stimulation (FES) orthoses.
