Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed project lies in the general area of those vinyl polymers which have less than perfectly regular chains by virtue of ???: it is modelling-led and addresses the central issue of the crystallisation of aperiodic chains. There is a special focus on polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH), not only because of the long-standing question of the high crystallinity seen in samples which are both ??? and chain branched, but also because of the commercial possibilities afforded by the polymer when synthesised with stereospecific control. While the modelling work will embrace a range of vinyl polymers in order to achieve a general understanding of the relationship between chain irregularity and crystalline order, the attention given to PVOH will also involve some experimental work. It will include the synthesis of stereoregular samples using established laboratory routes, full molecular characterisation, and detailed diffraction analysis of the samples as a function of temperature and water content.
