Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is concerned with the development of practical, large-scale lexicons for use in computer applications that use natural language. Rather than constructing lexicons from scratch, we aim to develop tools which use existing lexicons as base data and support the production of new lexicons through techniques for lexicon merging, induction of additional structure, and optimisation of representation. These tools will be driven by both application-specific data and insights from lexical representation theory. The work will be evaluated through pilot application in the fields of text generation and information extraction. Progress:This poster coincides with the start of the project, so there is little progress to report. Dr Adam Kilgarriff has been appointed to work on the project for three years. Some preliminary investigations of the character and availability of a number of potential lexical knowledge sources have been undertaken including Wordnet, CELEX, AQUILEX, XTAG and some of the resources used in the Message Understanding Conference initiative.
