Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary objective of this research is to promote efficient radial diffusion in capillaries by obviating the parabolic flow profile normally associated with laminar flow in forced flow conditions. By these means broadening of solute bands in separation capillaries will be minimised and also will force the solute molecules to the inner surface of the capillaries so that normal interactive chromatography can occur. The second objective will entail chemically bonding functional groups to the inner surface of the capillary and developing the chemistries necessary for stainless steel and glass capillaries (the last methodology is fairly well established). The final objective of this work will be to demonstrate that, under these conditions of enhanced radial diffusion in capillaries with chemically bonded functional groups, the efficiency in all forms of capillary methods of separation in chromatography and electrophoresis will be enhanced with a concomitant substantial reduction in the use of potentially hazardous organic liquids.
