Summary on Grant Application Form
Single crystal nickel-base superalloys are routinely used to produce turbine blades for critical positions, but these important materials face an increasing challenge as aeroengine temperatures increase in attempts to improve efficiency. During deformation at temperatures above 900C, the cuboidal precipitates of the strengthening gamma-prime phase coalesce to form rafts. The geometry of these rafts varies with the orientation of the crystal and the sense of the applied stress. The effects of the resulting raft geometries on the creep behaviour are not understood. The principal aim of the proposed work is to characterise the dislocation interactions with these rafts and relate them to the measured macroscopic creep behaviour. This knowledge will give single crystal superalloys the potential to be exploited at higher temperatures and will increase confidence in their use in these regimes.
