Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed research is an investigation into the electric arc characteristics, and the parameters, which affect the arc immobility; this will involve investigations of the metallic to gaseous transition point. The arc root mobility, and venting and cooling due to side plate configuration, will also be investigated to improve the arc chamber performance. A new arc imaging system will be used and software methods developed to study the arc motion. Software studies will also be undertaken into the influence of electromagnetic forces on the arc, and on the control of the high speed actuator used to move the contacts. All results will be applied to the design of new circuit breaker configurations, and may also lead to new products.
