Summary on Grant Application Form
Narrow-Gap Antimonide Heterostructures will be given by Molecular Beam Epitaxy and characterised by a wide range of optical and electrical techniques. The programme will be in collaboration with the Clarendon Laboratory, Oxford and DRA Malvern and the specialities of each site will be exploited as part of a common programme. The materials systems which will be grown at ICSTM are In (As, Sb)/InAs and In (As, Sb)/InSb, and InAs/GaSb/AlSb combinations. Structures containing AlSb will be supplied to Oxford. The aims of the growth and associated physics programmes will be to produce infrared LEDs and laser sources, tunnel devices, superconductor proximity-effect structures, high-speed FETs, and mesoscopic structures. A variety of non-linear optical effects will also be studied with these samples.
