Summary on Grant Application Form
The research has the overall objective of identifying the geotechnical parameters required by the next generation of geosynthetics/geotextiles used for the drainage, filtration and reinforcement of soils, waste materials and sludges. The proposal involves collaboration with polymer scientists from the Swedish Institution for Textile Research, whose role would be to identify the polymeric materials suitable for use in the proposed geosynthetic composite. The benefit of this collaboration would be the integration of basic polymer sceintists specialising in textile materials with researchers in geotechnical engineering specialising in geosynthetics. The primary objective is to determine the structure and optimum properties of composite geotextiles formed from polymeric materials with electrical properties. A secondary objective would be to research the uses of such a material in comparison with geotechnical solutions using conventional geotextiles. The proposed prototype material would be tested to determine their properties with respect to strength, creep, drainage and filtration. Testing would be using large scale facilities. A main feature of the work is to research the ability of the proposed new material to produce electro-osmotic effects.
