Summary on Grant Application Form
The group at Cambridge has developed the synthesis of a range of rigid-rod organometallic polymers which contain transition metal atoms linked by acetylide ligands. These molecules have the potential to exhibit non-linear optical and liquid crystalline properties. The general formula of these polymers is [M (L) -C C-R-C C-] (M=transition metal; L=PR3, P(OR)3, CO, chelating phosphines, macrocycles; x=2x or 4; R= alkynl, aryl, thiophene). The purpose of this grant request is to continue with the synthetic programme and to commence the development of devices using these materials. The synthetic programme will include the introduction of a range of sulphur-containing ring systems as the R group in the polymer chains, as thiophene ring systems have been shown to enhance the electron flow down the polymer. It is planned to use some of the existing palladium and platinum rigid-rod polymers as materials in the development of a solid state diode laser. The heavy transition metals have sufficient spin-orbit coupling to give rise to triplet-singlet photoluminescence. The liquid crystalline properties of the polymers will be studied in terms of both their lyotropic and thermotropic behaviour.
