Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is proposed to develop and test a process which capitalises on the high activity of homogeneous catalysts while, at the same time, overcoming the problems associated with separation of the catalyst from the effluent. Initially, the reaction kinetics (eg with a copper homogeneous catalyst) and the properties of candidate membrane materials will be investigated. Subsequently, an integrated process consisting of catalytic reactor, closed catalyst recirculation loop and reverse osmosis membrane module will be studied. This process will have the additional benefit that the high pressures required for the efficient operation of the catalyst will be used as the driving force for the reverse osmosis separation. The reverse osmosis membrane employed will be selective for water transport but will have high rates of rejection for organics and catalyst metal ions. The project aims to select suitable membrane modules, investigate fundamental membrane and homogeneous catalyst performance, and demonstrate the novel process in continuous operation.
