Summary on Grant Application Form
This research programme involves the development of routes to chiral, nonracemic methyleneaziridines and their applications in asymmetric synthesis. Three different strategies to homochiral methyleneasiridines are presented. N-Tosyl methyleneasiridines will be accessed using a copper catalysed asymmetric aziridination reaction whereas the corresponding N-BOC derivatives will be amenable using an enantioselective deprotonation/alkylation protocol. Other derivatives will be prepared using a simple chiral auxiliary based method. The chemical reactivity of chiral, nonracemic methyleneasiridines will be probed. It is anticipated that these compounds will provide a mild route to a variety of a-amino acids. Further studies will be undertaken to evaluate the aziridine opening reaction s and the cycloadditon chemistry of these compounds.
