Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this project is to develop the use of acoustic microscopy as a quantitative means of correlating the elastic mechanical properties of adhesive/adherent interlayers with observations using TEM and surface chemical analyses. This will assist the understanding of the role of the interlayer in the strength of the joint and in its resistance to environmental attack. In particular, the measured mechanical properties will be used to predict the stress distribution in typical adhesive joints and hence to investigate the effect of interlayer properties on the joint strength and failure path. The measurement frequencies used will primarily be between 220 MHz and 1 GHz which means that it will be possible to obtain accurate measurements on interlayers of the thickness found in typical industrial joints. Some work will also be done using Brillouin spectrometry at a frequency of 10 GHz. This will offer a chance to measure the properties of layers with thicknesses of the order of 0.1 mm which will be particularly valuable for the study of the early stages of environmental attack.
