Summary on Grant Application Form |
Research conducted on SERC research grant GR/H 18395 has shown that horizontal oscillatory motion is a principal cause of motion sickness in road transport. It has also been shown that a large percentage of the public suffer from motion sickness in road transport. However, there has been no systematic study of how the motion sickness caused by horizontal motion depends on the magnitude, direction or frequency of horizontal motion and there is currently no way of predicting motion sickness from measurements of motion in road (or rail) transport. By laboratory experimentation, this project will determine the dependence of motion sickness on the magnitude, direction and frequency of motions in the horizontal directions. A knowledge of the influences of these factors will assist the design of vehicles, roads and rails so as to minimise motion sickness in transport. Field studies cannot be used for this purpose since, in most vehicles, the variables to be investigated can vary. The conduct of the proposed studies will allow the development of standard procedures for predicting motion sickness in road transport. Previous research has resulted in the development of similar procedures for sea sickness which are now incorporated in National and International standards and used internationally by designers and operators.
