Summary on Grant Application Form |
The investigation proposed here is a development of research just completed under grant GR/F78774. A summary report on that work is appended to this application. The project will be theoretical in nature, and will apply the methods of atomic-scale computer simulation to understand and predict the mechanisms that lead to structural changes in irradiated ordered alloys. Particular uncertainty resides in aspects such as the effects of the order-disorder temperature, matrix temperature, spike-zone overlap and mixing at the interface between different phases of the same alloy system. Furthermore, the research will be developed to study in a systematic way the processes involved more generally in the formation and stability of metastable phases in alloys. Computer simulation provides a unique and powerful way of identifying processes involved in these issues. Supercomputing resources are required for this project. Also, it is proposed that our M.D. computing codes be developed on a massively parallel machine so that the work can be applied to new regimes of energy and time, and so an earmarked studentship is requested under the auspices of the Science and Materials Computing Committee initiative.
