STM and AFM will be used to study the evolution of surface structure at high resolution during the course of reactions driven by the absorption of light. These areas have been chosen for detailed investigation; 1. Photoetching and photodeposition at the semiconductor/electrolyte interface; 2. Light assisted dissolution of mineral solids in aquatic environments, and 3. Light induced processes at polymer surfaces. The common theme of the work is the in-situ, real time investigation of surface structure. The primary objective is to link the macroscopic charges observed by SPM to the macroscopic characterisation of the process measured by other techniques. In the first stage of the study, the progresses will be controlled by intermittent illumination so that AFM/STM can be used to establish the changes in surface structure at different scales. In the second stage, real time evolution of the surface will be followed at low light intensities in repeated scans. We expect that these challenging SPM studies will have an important impact on our current research programmes aimed at characterising the photochemistry of these systems by macroscopic methods.
