This project concentrates on definitive ab initio total energy calculations on structures with mixes of sp2 and sp3 bonding, modelled within large molecular fragments. It aims to prove: a) that graphite self-interstitials tend to form strings in the 0001 direction, b) that the half-planes in prismatic edge dislocations (in two different basal directions) in graphite reconstruct by sp3 bonding with neighbouring planes and c) study the core of a prismatic (0001) screw dislocation. We shall take the new structural units found in b) and c) to build novel carbon materials, particularly foams, bubble wrap and negative Poissons ratio structures. We shall investigate how oxygen terminates the half-plane differently to i) improve graphite tribology, ii) change the activity of activated carbons, iii) affect gasification and iv) oxidise refractory carbons. We shall also study self-interstitial and prosmatic dislocation motion in graphite.
