Summary on Grant Application Form
Theoretical and experimental studies of the effects of random anisotropy in disordered (principally amorphous) magnets have concentrated on the static magnetic properties. It is readily acknowledged that the dynamics of such systems, although dominating the magnetic response, are not well understood. However, remarkably little has been done to characterise the dynamic spin correlations. We have begun to make substantial progress in the understanding of random anisotropy magnets by concentrating our investigations upon the dynamical magnetic properties. We therefore intend to consolidate this programme, focusing primarily upon amorphous rare earth transition metal compounds. The results of our complex ac susceptibility, low and high field magnetisation, neutron scattering and Musr measurements will be correlated with recent, extensive, theoretical models and numerical simulations.
