Summary on Grant Application Form |
The sysnthesis and structural characteration (via x-ray analysis and/or a variety of multinuclear nmr methods) of a range of homo- and hetero-metallic clusters will be carried out in order to systemise site selectivities of:a) progressive P-donor ligand substitution ibcluster with greater than or equal to 6 metal atoms, particularly those containing interstitial atoms, and to provide comparative data for other donor ligands, particularly N- and O-donor ligands.b) deprotonation in multihydrido clusters which contain inequivalent sites, eg. H2 Ru2 Rh2 (CO)12 and the site(s) of protonation in asymmetric clusters, eg. trigonal prosmatic [Rh6C(CO)12(PPh3)]2-.The dimerisation shown below proceed very cleanly and we wish to obtain a better understanding of this remarkable skeletal rearrangement by studying analogous reactions of phosphine substituted clusters.2[HRh6(CO)15]- --> [Rh12(C)2(CO)24]2-The recently reported cluster [Rh6N(CO)12]- provided a rare example of an unsaturated 84-electron octahedral cluster and we wish to exploit the reactivity of this cluster.
