Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary purpose of this research programme is to experimentally verify the ability of tangential forebody flow control to provide yaw control on combat aircraft at angles of attack in excess of 90 degrees. An additional objective will be to develop forebody shapes which enable the development of yaw control by the same method at low angles of attack to facilitate the removal of the ventral fin. Future aircraft configurations will increasingly require the ability to operate without deflected control surface for trim or manoeuvre and the absence of a fin will further enhance their low observable characteristics. A recent research programme within the school of Mechanical Engineering has confirmed the concept of tangential forebody flow control as an efficient means of providing yaw control between 20 degrees and 70 degrees angle of attack. The existing baseline models, facilities and techniques would suggest a successful conclusion to this programme.
