To research and design the extension of the open hypermedia system Microcosm to a heterogeneous networkTo implement the resulting model and evaluate its execution over local and wide area networksTo investigate the integration of existing network information services such as World Wide WebProgress:Our investigation into the extension of the Microcosm model to a heterogeous network has identified the key technical areas to be addressed, and we have made significant progress in designing appropriate solutions.Specifically, we have designed a communications protocol to extend the Microcosm message passing model to the Internet, and in addition we have built a demonstrator which makes use of HTTP (the World Wide Web protocol) which enables us to explore various aspects of Microcosm-WWW integration. With respect to scalability, we are investigating the use of a new protocol for registration and location of Microcosm resources on the scale of the Internet.We are on schedule with respect to the work programme, and are currently investigating the implementation options. The infrastructure for working over ATM and ISDN will become available in March, and we will incorporate these technologies in our implementation work. The work on WWW integration was presented at the ERCIM World Wide Web Workshop on authoring at INRIA, and we have had a paper accepted for a UK conference in April.
