1) Developing a model of heterogeneous nucleation kinetics, based on the rate at which solid adsorption takes place on the surface of an efficient nucleation catalyst. (2) Applying the model quantitatively to entrained droplet measurements of the nucleation kinetics and resulting solidification microstructures in ternary alloy systems; (3) Comparing qualitatively the model predictions with grain size and segregation measurements from complex solidification processing methods such as melt spinning and squeeze casting.
