Engineering components suffer complex stress patterns from multiple loading modes involving combinations of bending, torsional, pressure, thermal and axial stresses, where each individual cyclic stress level is seldom constant during the lifetime of a component. A scientific and fundamental study is proposed to quantify damage accumulation in multiaxial fatigue in terms of crack growth. Experiments will be conducted for a range of complex multiaxial loading histories to investigate the influence of changing (a) strain level, (b) strain state, (c) principal stress orientation, and (d) mode of loading. The low cycle fatigue strain-controlled cumulative damage tests will be on tubular specimens of medium carbon steel, under combined axial load, torsion, internal and external pressure.Short and long crack growth rules will be adopted to determine a crack-growth based damage summation procedure for multiaxial loading. Existing multiaxial damage summation criteria will be reviewed, with particular reference to critical plane theories; and their advantages of disadvantages assessed.
