Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project, submitted to the LINK EEM programme aims to investigate and enhance the performance of slide bead and reverse roll coating processes using polymeric additives. The goal is to create a flexible CFD tool with which it will be possible to fully understand the complex fluid dynamic/material interaction associated with the above. In order to produce coatings of the required quality at the required speed one must know how to formulate the coating solution. There is a wide range of polymers and additives that can be tried, but without understanding the science of coating solution and its interaction with the substrate it is impossible to select such materials by rational means. This requires understanding the rheological properties of the basic polymer solutions and altering their composition in tandem with feedback from knowledge of the complex behaviour of associated fluid dynamics. The above represents a considerable scientific challenge, the realisation of which will have important ramifications for the coating community at large. The novelty arises from the tripartite approach which is to be adopted.
