Summary on Grant Application Form
The fundamental nature of the interaction of organic corrosion inhibitors with metals will be investigated by utilising surface science techniques of Reflection Absorption Infrared Spectroscopy, Low Energy Electron Diffraction, Auger spectroscopy and work function measurements. This combination of techniques will elucidate details on the nature of the adsorbed species, its orientation with respect to the metal surface, the detailed geometric arrangement of the adsorption site on the metal surface, the nature of the chemical bond between the inhibitor and the metal and, finally, the direction of charge transfer that occurs upon adsorption. Investigations will be conducted on (i) well-defined model inhibitor/metal systems in vacuum; (ii) polycrystalline metal samples in vacuum and (iii) polycrystalline metal samples in solution. The data from the model systems will serve as a basis for understanding the information from the progressively more realistic and, therefore, more complicated systems.
