Summary on Grant Application Form
The basis of this work is to prepare and characterise a wide range of microgel particles based on poly(N-isopropylacrylamide). Their preparation would be by emulsion polymerisation, with a variety of co-monomers to vary the nature and bulk charge density, and also the hydrophobicity, of the microgel particles, as well as their degree of coil-linking. Characterisation of the microgel latex particles would include particle size, charge density (by titration) and electrophoretic mobility measurements, each as a function of temperature. These microgel systems would then be used to study the absorption/release behaviour of specific ions (eg Pb2+, CD2+) from ion mixtures in water, at the University of Greenwich (see accompanying proposal).
