Summary on Grant Application Form |
This proposal is aimed at developing methods for fabricating and controlling guided wave optical systems over the frequency range from DC up to the frequency of the optical carrier itself using fully-integrated optoelectronic sub-systems on a single wafer. To achieve this aim, it is proposed to utilise the strong nonlinearities present in active semiconductor amplifiers and saturable absorbers, together with gratings to control the optical spectrum. Specifically, we shall study the behaviour of Q-switched lasers, mode-locked lasers and grating-based devices, using techniques such as harmonic locking, non-linear interactions in laser devices and filtering to provide control of the optical carrier. The core activity is to construct a complete all-optical soliton retiming system; the devices required will be a laser-based GHz clock extractor, an electrically controlled time delay and an all-optical switch. These devices will have many other novel systems applications, some of which we shall pursue as non-core activities. We shall start demonstrator work in the 10-20 GHz range, but the system concepts would be applicable well towards 1THz. The programme will contain strong theoretical and experimental strands, as well as fundamental studies of the basic materials science.
