Summary on Grant Application Form |
Novel theoretical and experimental techniques are to be developed to probe the ultra fast dynamics of media as yet untouched by femtosecond technology. To this end a femtosecond spectrometer, utilising the latest advances in optical technology and diagnostics, will be installed to deliver 70 ps pulses at energies up to 500 mJ at a repetition rate between 1 and 5 kHz. Our proposed experiments require two frequencies, the second to be generated from a range of non-linear crystals to provide tens of micro joules energies in <100 fs from the UV to 10 microns. This system will be applied in a number of novel or recently developed experiments to probe for the first time the ultrafast dynamics of interfaces. The preliminary semi-quantitative results will be of great interest, but a detailed interpretation will require advances in the theoretical understanding of optical phenomena in these partially oriented systems, and their orientational dynamics. Ways forward are outlined. In a second set of experiments the dynamics of photodissociation of small molecules in the condensed phase will be followed by femtosecond ir spectroscopy. For the first time fragment populations and orientations will be determined, leading to a detailed picture of reactions in solution. Finally, some well known femtosecond experiments will be extended to novel systems of some technological importance.
