Summary on Grant Application Form |
The phenomenon of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) in metallic multilayers is currently a topic of much study. The interest lies in both the fundamental physical processes giving rise to GMR and the technological potential of magnetic sensors of one hundred Angstroms in thickness. At present, the origin of the GMR response is a matter of contention that we intend to resolve. The problem arises from the inability of the current methods of film growth to systematically engineer the interfaces between successive metallic layers. In this project, we will investigate the deposition of Co/Cu, Fe/Cr, etc., GMR structures using steered-plume pulsed-laser deposition. This technique will permit a degree of control of the engineering of such structures that is not possible by conventional methods. Grown films will be analysed for their magnetic and structural properties as well as their compositional profiles. The characterisation techniques employed will include magnetoresistance measurements, magneto-optic Kerr effect and bulk and surface analyses such as SIMS and AES. Once the properties of these structures are understood, the GMR response will be optimised for use in commercial devices (Hirst Magnetic Instruments Ltd).
