The applicant is one of a team within the department which has been developing techniques for high quality compression of images to large compression ratios. Industrial advice is that the algorithms developed would be contenders for adoption in the forthcoming MPEG-4 standard.The applicant has been co-opted on to the UK delegation to the Standards Committee (one of only 9 members and the sole representative of an academic institution).This applications is made to cover minimal expenses incurred in attending the November 7-11 meeting in Singapore. The applicant will use the time in Singapore to present on the current state of the relevant algorithms to make contacts and to explore possibilities for on-going contacts with major commercial players in the field.
