Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is divided into three workpackages. In the first workpackage, the polyphase IIR sub-band decomposition structures developed in FREETEL will be enhanced by investigating structural constraints which eliminate inter-band aliasing. The effects of changing the structure of the adaptive filters in each sub-band will be considered for NLMS and fast QR type adaptive algorithms. Furthermore, the characteristics of the dynamic environment will be modelled and used to alter the adaptive filter structure. In the second workpackage, adaptive algorithms that utilise the non-stationary nature of the speech signal will be developed. Some recent work on using arbitrary error norms for adaptation will be considered. Moreover, the non-stationary nature of the sub-band signals will be investigated. Amplitude statistic information will be used to modify the structure of the adaptive algorithm in addition to the temporal information. In the third workpackage, the best sub-band AEC will be identified by carrying out exhaustive tests on the structures and algorithms developed in the previous workpackages. An evaluation tool will be written which will contain Echo Return Loss Enhancement (ERLE), Time of Initial Convergence (TIC) and various tracking tests. The final AEC system will be implemented on real-time DSP hardware and a demonstrator will be prepared.
