Summary on Grant Application Form |
Sealed joints in curtain walling often fail prematurely and it is believed that this is associated largely with high levels of joint movement, which includes `movement during cure'. Large and often rapid building panel movements can occur through thermal expansion, especially with modern insulated light-weight cladding panels. The proposed work extends previous research conducted by Oxford Brookes within the RESEAL project and tackles a major unexplored area of construction sealants research with a strong industrial partnership. The purpose of this project is to investigate fully the behaviour of sealants in high movement joints and to develop guidelines for sealant formulation and joint design in order to improve the sealed system performance in high movement joints. A programme of laboratory tests will be supported by analytical techniques in which changes in sealant characteristics will be measured during different regimes of joint disturbance and environmental exposure. Measurement of sealed joint behaviour in large-scale curtain walling installations will also be made for comparison with laboratory testing. It is expected that the results of these experiments will lead to a recommendation for test methods which could be incorporated in new CEN/ISO standards.
