Summary on Grant Application Form |
One of the major factors limiting the widespread exploitation of neural networks has been the perceived difficulty of ensuring that a trained network will continue to perform satisfactorily when installed in an operational system. This substantial and ambitious programme will directly address the Key Questions of the reliability and robustness of neural networks when used in embedded systems, including safety-critical applications, identified in the EPSRC programme. It will exploit recent developments in the theory of learning and generalisation in neural networks, and will develop techniques whereby the generalisation performance of a network can be quantified, and limits given on the nature and degree of errors in the network predictions. Networks which remain adaptive during use will be included in this analysis. The aim is to assist in the creation of a guiding framework to be constructed by legislative bodies (such as the Health and Safety Executive) by performing the fundamental research needed in collaboration with key UK participants to ensure the utility of the proposed research. In particular, this project brings together the major UK organisations with a direct interest in validation of neural networks, as well as organisations concerned with the exploitation of neural computing in areas requiring high system integrity.
