Summary on Grant Application Form |
A promising method for computer modelling finite sharply curved frequency selective surfaces has recently arisen in EPSRC grant GR/H15100. It has been shown to be capable of coping with an FSS enclosing a receiving antenna and very importantly, analyses both simultaneously as one complete structure. Antenna/radome interaction, which is difficult to include in methods where the two are analysed in cascade, is automatically taken into account. But although it can deal with a wide range of curvatures and element lattices, at present its application is very restricted - to linear dipole FSS, either free standing or on thin supporting substrates. The proposed project aims to remove this restriction and extend the analysis and modelling to the practical cases of single or multiple layers of dual polarised elements, in slot as well as patch form, embedded in curved dielectric layers with a range of thickness. The project will also study the case of planar array antennas closely coupled to parallel dichoic protective covers. The extent of the coupling, and its influence on antenna performance, will be quantified in both cases. In parallel with the computer modelling is a series of experimental studies of array and waveguide horn feeds enclosed by dichroic radomes.
