This programme will investigate the properties of new kinds of organocuprate reagents containing ligands that are simultaneously able to stabilise copper (I) and the Lewis acid counter cation associated with a generalised cuprate M[RNTCuRT] (M = counter cation, Li, Mg, Al, etc; RNT = non-transferable group, SAr, PR2; RT = transferable organo function). Bidentate ligands of the types HO-bridge-SH and HO-bridge-PHR will engender organocuprate structures midway between traditional 'low order' and so called 'higher order' cuprates. The presence of a chiral bridge will allow use of these reagents in asymmetric copper-catalysed additions of organometallics to enone systems.
