The aim of the programme is to investigate the use of prestressed masonry arch structures in order to obtain data to develop their use in construction leading to durable, economic structures which is of great importance to the construction industry.The use of synthetic prestressing tendons could further reduce whole life costs of the structure.The work involves the site load testing of two prefabricated prestressed flat arch box girder brickwork footbridges which were recently constructed at Tring, Herts and are the first of their kind in the country. The opportunity to test a full scale structure in order to determine short and long term behaviour is indeed unique and will provide data in order to identify any critical design features and to validate design methods.It is intended to carry out three site test loadings of the structures over a 2 year period, in order to measure deflection, strain and also to look at behaviour during tendon replacement. In order to compare results and carry out longer term load testing it is proposed to construct a half scale model of the structure in the laboratories at the University of Plymouth.It is anticipated that the work outlined in the proposal will lead to further work on prestressed arches both as new construction and also as a strengthening method.
