Summary on Grant Application Form |
A quantitative understanding of surface structure and of adsorbates on surfaces is a crucial first step in understanding the electronic and chemical properties of such surfaces, and thus ultimately of understanding such phenomena as heterogeneous catalysis, surface corrosion and passivation, and various forms of controlled expitaxial growth and interface formation. This proposal seeks to extend an existing successful collaborative development of the technique of scanned energy mode photoelectron diffraction to the further determination of molecular adsorbate structures, and particularly those of relevance to model surface reactions. A combined approach involving parallel activity on further technique development and evaluation, and further technique application, is planned. The principal adsorbates to be studied will be those containing C, N and O atoms, including small hydrocarbons and alkoxide and carboxylate reaction intermediates. One aspect of the further technique evaluation is a proper assessment of the significance of multi-parameter structural solutions obtained in this, and related methods.
