Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this research programme is to undertake an extensive study into acoustic wave sensors fabricated using special-purpose piezoelectric thick-films. The early stages of the work will seek to improve and optimise the piezoelectric paste formulation by undertaking fundamental studies on thin films. Measurements of the realtive permittivity, impedance, charge coefficients etc are needed in addition to studying the film morphology by using SEM techniques. The nature of the electrode geometry and effects of metal migration into the sensing film will also be carried out. An important area of study is identifying the exact nature of the travelling acoustic wave to determine whether a surface effect or a bulk effect is playing the dominant role. It is envisaged that the devices will be operated as delay-line oscillators to provide an output in the frequency domain. The electronic circuitry will be integrated onto the same substrate as the sensor. The final stages of the programme will involve characterising the complete transducer.
