The two complementary aims of this proposal are (i) to develop and extend our recent work on the generation of ultra-broadband light using parametric stimulated Raman scattering and (ii) to study the phenomena of optical self-trapping and bullet formation under non-paraxial conditions. Both elements of the proposal represent new departures and both are highly topical in view of potential applictions in inertial confinement fusion and optical information technology.Under the first heading, the possiblity of generating up to 50 Raman orders spanning a bandwidth comparable to an optical frequency opens up a goldmine of new physics. We wish to develop the theory of the process, to extend the work to nitrogen, and to assess the importance of transverse (diffractive) effects. Under the second heading, we propose to focus on the problem of optical beam confinement in the non-paraxial regime; previous studies of self-trapping have normally been performed in the paraxial approximation in which beams can undergo an unphysical collapse. We will study both continuous and pulsed beams, the latter being the case of optical bullets. We hope to apply the results in a cavity geometry with the ultimate goal of a miniaturised optical memory system.
