The proposal relates to equipment and scientific support required to establish the National Centre for Virtual Environments for Engineering, Construction and Bio-Technology. The Centre has the support of over twenty organisations who will build collaborative research projects on the hardware/software platforms included in this proposal. It will also provide the basis for an MSc in Virtual Environment. The centre will network with several universities and five have already expressed an interest. The aims of the centre are to continue to keep the UK at the forefront of VR applications and research, to build a network of VR users and suppliers; to educate and train VR researcher and industrial personnel; to supply applications oriented graduates to UK industry; to provide methodologies for UK industry in building Virtual Environments. The Centre will build on the current level of work largely funded by UK industry, DOE, EPSRC, and charitable foundations with extensive support by the University of Salford.
