Summary on Grant Application Form
A collaboration between Heriot-Watt University Physics Dept and BT Research Laboratories will develop visible vertical cavity lasers fabricated from II-VI semiconductors. BT have successfully demonstrated room temperature pulsed III-V vertical lasers and the proposed research will take advantage of the BT expertise to design analogous II-VI lasers. The first stage will be the development of undoped laser structures which will be investigated by optical pumping using an excimer-dye laser system to obtain optical threshold values. Secondly, electrically pumped vertical diode lasers will be fabricated using dielectric mirrors for the Fabry-Perot cavity and finally the laser structures will be grown with an n-type distributed Bragg reflector.
