Summary on Grant Application Form |
There is a comprehensive research programme in the general area of compact vibronic laser systems with specific emphasis on the development of a particularly user friendly and potentially inexpensive, tunable femtosecond, all solid state (diode pumped) oscillator-amplifier arrangement. Initially it has a projected pulse energy of 1J at up to 15kHz repetition rate and a recompressed amplified pulsewidth in the region of 100 - 200 fs.Parallel investigations will examine the amplification of compact, diode pumped, narrow linewidth (<20MHz) microlasers in kilohertz regenerative amplifier arrangements.Investigations will also take place on visible solid state lasers and on simultaneous red/green operating systems, based on Pr doped crystals. Self mode locking, self starting lasers based on these crystals will also be investigated, as will up conversion pumping mechanisms.A fibre laser pumped and direct diode pumped Cr:YAG lasers be examined as a simple, tunable source n the near infra red and pulse compression studies of this laser will also be undertaken.
