Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research will study uniform and spatially varied flow in drainage conduits of different shapes, with and without sediment material. The conduits will be optimised in terms of discharge capacity and self cleansing of the sediment over a typical range of slopes. Spatially varied flow in channels of complex cross section is difficult to analyse theoretically and therefore experimental studies will be undertaken in a 15m x 0.46m wide flume and a 9m x 1.2m wide flume with roadway surfaces. Empirical relationships will be developed to give the mean water surface profile, given longitudinal slope, cross section geometry, roughness coefficient(s), lateral inflow rate and inlet geometry. Leakage through the joints between units, and between the units ad the adjacent pavement, will also be investigated under normal conditions, followed by some tests with a limited number of units in an environmental chamber under a variety of temperature conditions and hydrostatic heads.
