Summary on Grant Application Form
Aircraft components such as flaps, fins, and rudders, may be categorized as box-type structures. In operation, these components may be subjected to a high level of random acoustic loading: a 155 dB level is, for example, encountered on an airbus flap. This loading may cause severe fatigue damage to the component, and at present there are no design techniques for the avoidance of this effect. This project concerns the development of a structural analysis and design technique for producing lightweight, box-type structures of novel materials with maximum fatigue resistance, ie maximum life in the in-service environment. Both theoretical and complementary experimental work will be carried out, the latter using facilities which are unique in a UK university. The result will be a design technique which is directly applicable to aircraft box-type structures, but which will also be applicable to other engineering structures. In this regard the work will involve fundamental enhancement f the dynamic stiffness method of analysis, and further more the damping characteristics of built-up structures made from new materials will be determined.
