Summary on Grant Application Form |
The project will begin with synthetic studies designed to prepare a range of diboron(4) compounds with the general type B2Y4 (where Y is a ...-donor group, such as alkoxide, amide or thiolate, in order to effect stability; both monodentate and chelating groups, such as catecholates, will be examined). Once a range of compounds has been prepared and fully characterised, their potential application in two specific areas will be examined. Firstly, we will prepare radical anions of the form [B2Y4] - and explore the reactivity of the B-B bond in diboron(4) compounds towards oxidative addition reactions at suitable low-valent transition metal centres as a means of preparing transition metal diboryl compounds of the general formula [LnM(BY2)2]. The interest in these latter species stems from their involvement in transition metal catalysed hydroboration and diboration reactions. The likely benefits of this research are new insights into molecular based electronic materials and metal mediated diboration reactions of use in organic synthesis.
