Summary on Grant Application Form
In-situ Brillouin light scattering (BLS) is a powerful probe of the magnetic properties of ultrathin magnetic films. Such studies yield a fundamental understanding of the origin of the magnetic properties needed for optimising magnetic properties, for example for future magnetic recording and sensor applications. In this proposal we will carry out systematic in-situ spin wave measurements in ultrathin MBE-grown epitaxial films by BLS for which structural analysis by RHEED will be performed. By analysing the spin wave frequency we are able to unambiguously determine anisotropy strengths, the value of the magnetisation, coupling strengths, g values as well as structure-related properties such as spin wave line widths. The programme will focus on studies of the evolution of magnetic anisotropies in epitaxial TN films, studies of exchange coupling, overlayer effects and of temperature dependence of the spin wave spectrum in epitaxial ultrathin structures using a state-of-the-art facility developed in an earlier grand (GR/G/40095), including spin valve structures and anisotropy-engineered structures relevant to high density ??ding heads and sensor devices.
