Summary on Grant Application Form |
Th eobject of the proposed investigation is to establish a better understanding of the motion characteristics of catamarans travelling at higher speeds in oblique waves. This will be carried out through a programme of model tests and theoretical investigation. The experimental work will entail tests on two catamaran models at Froude numbers yp to about 0.80 to determine motion and acceleration characteristics in oblique waves. The resulting data will be compared with available full scale trials for a catamaran of similar hull form. The model data will provide a necessary insight into the rough water performance of multihulls, and necessary data for the validation of theoretical approaches. The theoritical investigation will develop existing 3D and 2D approaches for application to multihulls at higher speeds in oblique waves. Attempts will be made to identify deficiencies in the existing theoretical methods in the light of the experimental evidence abd to develop a suitable theoretical methodology.
