Summary on Grant Application Form |
The overall purpose of this project is to develop novel, multi-phase, soft metal and composite coatings for applications which require improved tribological properties. Commercial, technological and environmental needs, identified in the bearings, printing and glass manufacturing industries will be met by these coatings. The work programme will be divided into tasks to deal with the following: soft metal and composite powder development, soft metal coating development by HVOF spraying, composite coating development, modelling of key aspects of HVOF spraying, laboratory and rig testing of coatings and field trials of components. An essential aim of the project is to provide a sound fundamental understanding of the links between powder variable, processing variables, deposit microstructure and tribological properties. Thus it is proposed to study HVOF deposition as it influences equilibrium and non-equilibrium microstructures in specific alloys with tribological applications.
