Loughborough University and TWI have recently demonstrated the feasibility of producing diffractive optical elements highly suited to high power lasers and extending the applications of high precision surfacing. Using the new technique the required intensity pattern for a given process is computed and then transformed into a diffraction pattern which is machined onto the surface of the focusing mirror. The diffractive; element can be considered an optical manipulator, that is, it can manipulate the properties of a laser beam such as phase, amplitude and polarisation. Such an element can thus be used to shape or focus a waveform to a different form. The focusing of complex shapes can be achieved efficiently and production techniques make mass replication of low cost, lightweight elements a possibility. In production applications, rotating carousels containing several of these diffractive optics are a real possibility, as this novel and radically different approach to focusing laser beams can also be applied to welding and cutting applications.
